Florian Métral. The Golden Hour. Visual and Material Economy of Gold on Venice’s Tower Clock. Renaissance in Gold. Knowledge, Symbolics and Uses of a Versatile Material in Europe, In press. ⟨hal-05711906⟩
Focusing on Venice's Torre dell'Orologio, this article links the "Golden Hour" aesthetic to Renaissance gilded architecture's civic role. Through re-evaluated archives detailing materials and techniques, combined with visual analysis of representations of the Tower Clock, it explores the visual economy of gold, arguing for its foundational status beyond mere ornament. By reconstructing the original 1499 appearance, the study reveals gold's centrality in the crafting of the clock monument, structuring civic spectacle, and shaping the enduring identity of Piazza San Marco.
