Le mobilier en bois en Europe après la Seconde Guerre mondiale

• Cette étude croisée des espaces forestiers en Europe, de la production et de la transformation du bois et de ses dérivés offre un éclairage nouveau sur l’importance du bois dans la création mobilière entre la Seconde Guerre mondiale et les années 1980. La dimension symbolique et sensorielle du bois a également été abordée. Quelques pays européens ont été pris pour référence : la Finlande, la Suède, le Danemark, l’Allemagne, la Grande-Bretagne, la France et l’Italie et leur production mobilière ont été analysés. L’accent a été mis sur la France et le Danemark, deux pays porteurs d’approches différentes. Le temps de l’hégémonie du bois dans l’ameublement est-il révolu ? Plusieurs constatations semblent le réfuter. Quelle est la place du bois dans la création mobilière d’après-guerre et comment se justifie-t-elle ?

European furniture in wood after the 2nd World War

• This cross-study of the European forest, the production and the different sorts of wood, reveals the importance of wood in European furniture design in the period from the end of the Second World War until the beginning of the eighties. The furniture design of European countries such as Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy has been studied. The sensorial aspect of wood as well as its symbolism has also been explored. Two countries, France and Denmark, have been put forward as they are particularly revealing of two different approaches. Would the time of hegemony of wood in the creation of furniture be passed ? Several findings seem to point out the contrary. Where is the true place of the wood in furniture design to be found in the post-war period ? And what are the reasons ?
