Humans have been gardening on Earth since the Neolithic period, in virtually all societies with agriculture. In fact, the most recent research suggests that the garden is even older than the field as a source of food. As Monique Mosser has pointed out, we can speak of a veritable 'drive for gardening' or 'gardening impulse', which refers to one of the deepest traits of the human condition, well highlighted by Robert Harrison: caring. This talk will attempt to lay down some philosophical and historical markers on this vast question.
