Research laboratory in Art history (from the Middle Ages to immediate contemporary), the Centre André-Chastel (UMR 8150) as a mixed unit, dates back in its current configuration to January 1, 2004; it is placed under triple supervision of the CNRS, Sorbonne University (Faculty of Letters) and the Ministry of Culture (General Directorate of Heritage).

The name of André Chastel testifies to the initial patronage that the art historian exercised over the two laboratories which evolved to UMR 8150: the CRHAM (Research Center for the History of Modern Architecture), created in 1959, and the French Heritage Research Laboratory (UMR 22).

Since January 1, 2019, the Center has been managed by Jean-Baptiste Minnaert (director), Antonella Fenech Kroke and Élisabeth Yota (deputy directors).
